Maui County GIS
Who are we?We're the Geographic Information System (GIS) Division of the Maui County Department of Management. GIS within the County of Maui had its inception in the early 1990s in the Department of Planning. As the demand for GIS services and expertise expanded to other departments, the need for a countywide GIS agency became apparent. In March 2000, the GIS Division was established in the Department of Management to provide GIS analysis, services and technical support and to promote the use of GIS throughout the county. The division has five full-time staff:
What do we do?We do a broad spectrum of GIS tasks including data collection and editing, geospatial analyses, mapmaking and cartography, R&D and applications development, and software support. Generally, these fall into three areas of focus:
Technical support. The division provides support for GIS users within the County and to the GIS user community at large. This includes hosting user meetings and coordinating periodic training (either one-on-one with individual users or for larger groups at the Maui Community College computer lab). Innovation. From its beginnings in the Department of Planning, the division has been involved in the testing and development of new GIS applications and finding new ways to use GIS to provide solutions to problems. An early example is the division's use of live interactive GIS in community meetings and County Council hearings (for which the County received an ESRI Special Achievement in GIS award in 1999). More recently, the division worked with the Maui Police Department to deploy the first wireless-enhanced 911 system within the State of Hawaii. Division staff continues to be active in the GIS field through participation in the Hawaii Geographic Information Coordination Council and in the GIS Subcommittee for the National Association of Counties (NACO).
Have any questions? If you would like more information on using live GIS in community meetings, our presentation at the 2000 ESRI International User Conference, "Have GIS, Travel Travel", is still available on the internet.
